Reigniting My Love of Museums
I did know about the strong presence of Scandinavian design in Copenhagen prior to coming, but I didn't know specifically how that would translate into such amazing museums. While I visited a couple of museums with classes, I saw many of them for fun. Here are the standouts.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Though it does require a trip outside the city (about 45 minutes north via train), the extra effort to get to Louisiana is well worth it. I went with my mom and grandma when they were visiting — we arrived an hour after opening, and I ended up staying until the museum closed. I especially loved the Sophie Calle exhibit and Memoryscapes, which featured projects by DnA_Design and Architecture and Atelier Tsuyoshi Tane Architects, the second exhibit in the series 'Architecture Connecting.' It was also so cool to see work by Yayoi Kusama and Jean-Michel Basquiat in person.
Danish Design Museum
I was very excited to see the furniture at the Danish Design Museum. The Danish Chair hall was particularly striking! The temporary exhibits were interesting too, and I wish I could have spent more time there. I did grab a poster in the gift shop on the way out, so that Danish chairs can continue to provide me with inspiration.
Copenhagen Contemporary
I originally went to the Copenhagen Contemporary with a class during a field study, but I ended up staying for long enough that I could see everything. It was nice to really have time to explore the installation by Kengo Kuma/KKAA in depth. It was just a cool space to be in. The same can be said for Aftershock by James Turrell. I was especially excited to experience one of his works after narrowly missing the opening of his new dome at the Aarhus Art Museum while there for the short study tour, and Aftershock did not disappoint. (You couldn't take photographs while experiencing the installation, so I included an image of a poster from the gift shop.) Beyond the Horizon, by A.A.Murakami, was also very neat.
Rosenborg Slot
Though not a museum in the same sense as the others on this list, I couldn't leave off Rosenborg Castle. You can tour the castle's various rooms, which feature preserved interiors and various historical objects. A basement exhibit also shows artifacts including the crown jewels. Everything was so lavishly decorated.
Whether or not you're a huge fan of art or history, Copenhagen's museums have a lot to offer, and I'd highly recommend checking them out!
